recognise behaviours that don’t support the values and suggest modifications to bring about change
be able to describe the attitude required of disability support workers
be able to demonstrate why sector values and positive attitudes are essential

A Certificate of Attendance is provided at the completion of the session to participants. This session compliments the nationally accredited units of competency, but it is not an accredited ‘unit’.

I have heard the term “social / community inclusion” quite a lot lately and the more I hear it, the more I wonder what it actually is.

If it means using local facilities in the community like shops, libraries and gyms then I’m included. But to me, it means having the spontaneity of being able to go out, meet, chat to and be with other people.

Maree continues this blog by discussing whether people with disabilities need to change their ways to conform to society or whether the "ordinary person in the street" could take some responsibility to help create a more inclusive society.

NEW Epilepsy Management Plan (EMP) templates now available

General details

The Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria in partnership with Melba Support Services, Scope, Villa Maria and the Department of Human Services under the One Person, One Plan Initiative have developed an EMP that suits the needs supporting a person living with a disability.

This initiative was borne through the shared frustration within the disability sector of long EMPs that were often not easy to follow or implement. Also, for people accessing respite, it was not efficient for different plans to be completed by the family and doctor for each service they accessed.

Hence, this EMP is designed to be a disability sector standard. DHS have now incorporated this EMP within their Residential Practice Manual and The Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria encourage all disability service providers to adopt this new EMP within their services.

2 day introductory workshop to SRV theory and principles

An exploration of the Social Role Valorisation framework with regard to people who are marginalised.

This two day event is for anyone who is interested in improving the lives of marginalised and disadvantaged people such as people with disabilities, people with a mental illness, frail aged and people experiencing poverty or homelessness.

Workshop Details

The workshop is desgined to assist participants to:

Understand social devaluation and its consequences for people who are marginalised;
Learn about SRV as a means of addressing those experiences of devaluation;
Strengthen one's motivation to counteract devaluation in the lives of people who knows and supports; and
Clarify the features of 'a good life' and the essential means of obtaining that good life.

People must aim to attend both days and stay for the full period. This event is a prerequisite to PASSING.

John has a long involvement in the lives of people with disabilities, in informal advocacy and friendship roles as well as the formal roles of service provider, teacher, adviser and service planner. John is one of two senior Social Role Valorisation and PASSING trainers in Australia.
