Customise Your Own Competency Job Profile            

Step 1

Review the Competency Job Profiles to find one that is fairly similar to the job you are thinking about.

Step 2

Create a table and then layout the Units of Competency.

Step 3

Review each Unit of Competency within the Competency Job Profile

Actions:

Look carefully at each Element of each Unit of Competency. Decide if the Element is relevant to the task and responsibilities of the job.

Discussion

Some of the Elements refer to attitudes; some of the Elements describe an action. Often an Element seems to be saying what the goal is, for example, Element 1 of CHCDIS 2C reads ‘Work to enhance the independence and ‘self-determination’ of the person with a disability. This means that instead of doing a task for a person with a disability you might:

By looking at each Element carefully, and thinking about what it means in your organisation and for the people you will be supporting, you can decide if that Element and then that Unit of Competency needs to be included in your Competency Job Profile.

You may choose to keep the Unit of Competency with each Element staying the same. Or you may choose to make some alterations to the Unit of Competency to make it fit in better.

Provide care and support

  1. Establish and maintain an appropriate relationship with people with disabilities
  2. Provide appropriate support to people with disabilities
  3. Assist in maintaining an environment that enables maximum independent living

Undertake basic administrative duties

  1. Organisational reporting procedures are followed
  2. Use workplace equipment

The person in this position won’t be talking to other groups. We can discard Element 4.
The person in this position won’t need to lead group discussions.

None of our people need assistance with mobility now, but they might later. We should keep this Unit just in case.

Apply advanced first aid

  1. Assess the situation
  2. Manage the casualty
  3. Coordinate First Aid activities until arrival of medical assistance
  4. Communicate essential incident details

We think every one needs this.
We will make it a Core Competency for our staff.
Keep this Unit.

Follow basic food safety practices

  1. Maintain food safety while carrying out food handling activities
  2. Comply with personal hygiene standards

We have a designated staff member who does the cooking.

We can discard this Unit.

HLTIN1A

Comply with infection control policies and procedures

  1. Collect, handle, store and manage clinical and other waste in accordance with organisational guidelines and waste management plans
  2. Clean and disinfect equipment and surfaces
  3. Maintain hygiene
  4. Identify and responds to infection risks

We don’t normally have clinical waste but we do have to clean up some surfaces.

Plan and/or modify meals and menus according to nutrition care plans

  1. Identify conditions requiring a nutrition care plan most commonly encountered by the client/patient group
  2. Identify the special nutritional and dietary needs of client/patient groups
  3. Develop or modify meals and menus to meet the special nutritional and dietary needs of client/patient groups
  4. Plan meals to meet the nutritional needs of ‘at risk’ groups
